The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization committed to preserving and building the non-GMO food supply, educating consumers, and providing verified non-GMO choices. They believe everyone deserves an informed choice about whether or not to consume or buy genetically modified organisms.

Why is HANA non-GMO certified and not Organic certified?

Non-GMO certification and Organic certification go hand-in-hand: According to the Organic Trade Association, “The use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is prohibited in organic products. This means an organic farmer can’t plant GMO seeds, an organic cow can’t eat GMO alfalfa or corn, and an organic soup producer can’t use any GMO ingredients. To meet the USDA organic regulations, farmers and processors must show they aren’t using GMOs, and that they are protecting their products from contact with prohibited substances, such as GMOs, from farm to table.”

Getting certified is often a lengthy and costly process. We chose to start with non-GMO certification. We are still searching for an organic certification that has the standards and integrity that we feel would align with HANA. We work only with reputable, ethical vendors, who have among the highest organic standards in the industry. All plant based ingredients in our products are 100% certified organic. Other ingredients such as our beeswax, vitamin E and Leucidal Liquid are either kosher certified, or EcoCert. Our white clay is quarry mined from naturally occurring deposits and is untreated. We will continue to search for an organic certification that aligns with our core values, but for now we stand by our products, and our organic label.
