Plants as Medicine

As I mentioned in my last post, I received my herbology certification from Sage Mountain Herbal Retreat Center, a 500 acre botanical preserve in central Vermont.  Sage Mountain was started 25 years ago by Rosemary Gladstar, a pioneer in the herbal movement and the "godmother" of American Herbalism. She began over 35 years ago developing herbal formulas in her herb shop in Sonoma County, California. She is the author of several books, including the best seller " Herbal Healing for Women". She is also a co-founder of Traditional Medicinal Tea Company. In 1994 she founded United Plant Savers, a non profit organization dedicated to the conservation and cultivation of at risk North American medicinal plants, and to preserving botanical sanctuaries across the US.

I was a complete novice when I started my studies with Sage Mountain. I am forever grateful to all the wonderful teachers, who clearly love what they do, and love the plants and herbs and the good earth in which they grow. Their generosity of spirit, patience, and infinite plant wisdom will always be appreciated!

"You are what you eat"

Welcome to the very first blog post for HANA Organic Skincare!  I'm so excited to be able to chat with you, and share my thoughts and experiences regarding the organic skincare world.  The question I get asked the most is, "how did you get started making your own products?"  That's a good question, with a roundabout answer.  I've spent most of my adult life experimenting with all things organic.

In my 20's I was introduced to Mother Earth News, a wonderful magazine full of DIY organic plans.  My imagination and inspiration ran wild, with plans to grow all my own food, and live sustainably and off the grid.  Alas, reality always interfered, and I would forget my plans and fall back into the very familiar lifestyle I was used to:  fast food, long days, long commutes and not enough sleep - not to mention a very poor skincare regime.  In my 20's and 30's I had really bad adult acne, which I'm sure was brought on by everything I just mentioned!

It wasn't until my 40's that I got serious about creating a more holistic, healthy lifestyle.  My search for that lifestyle brought me to Sage Mountain Herbal Retreat Center, where I received my certification as an herbalist.  It was during my studies with Sage Mountain that I learned how to make my own skincare products. I was hooked!  My skin immediately felt and looked better, and I felt better, too.  Just like food - "you are what you eat" - what you put on your skin goes in. Friends and family started asking for products, and HANA Organic Skincare was born.  It's been a wonderful, exciting journey - which of course is no where near ending yet!  We all love what we do here at HANA, and our good intentions are a vital ingredient in every product we make.
